TOUCH SCREEN GLOVES (Pinspiration)
My brother is 20 years old, a sophomore in college and impossible to find gifts for. Seriously. Boys that age are impossible because they buy everything they want (music, movies, video games) for themselves.
So, when I saw these on Pinterest I knew I had nailed his gift. He got an iPhone a few months ago. He goes to school in Indiana where the winters are as cold, snowy and miserable as they are up in Boston where I live.
With these gloves…he can use his phone without taking his gloves off! And they totally work. I did a test drive when he was distracted the other day. So, for the tech lover in your life, these gloves are a must.
Anyways, the gloves on the left are by Etre. The gloves I purchased, on the right, are by Eddie Bauer. Happy smart phone use!

CHRISTMAS CUPCAKES (Pinspiration)
Underneath my first batch of reindeer cupcakes was this wonderful surprise…red & green cupcakes underneath! Easy, festive and pretty. I should’ve sliced one open for a better picture, but you get the idea.
WHAT I LEARNED
Layer.  I spooned 2 red layers and 2 green layers into each cupcake. I also swirled some of them around, to try to marbelize it. All of them looked awesome.
Food coloring.  You will need a lot of food coloring. Way more than you expect.
Diet Soda. This is my trick, it’s not new to anyone on here most likely, but I love it. I made the cupcakes with one box of white cake mix and 12 ounces of diet cream soda. That’s it! I promise it works, it makes them way healthier, and they have a nice vanilla flavor.
So, get Christmas-ing because to quote my current favorite sitcom…grinches be crazy!

BRAID IN BRAID (Pinspiration)
So, I’m trying something new. I am a little (a lot) compulsive about showering, being clean, etc. so I usually wash my hair every day. The more I read about hair care though, it seems like my hair type (coarse, wavy, frizzy) shouldn’t be washed that often. So, I’ve switched to an every-other-day system.
On my in between days, I never really know what to do with my hair. I sometimes will wet it and leave it beachy-wavy, but that just looks inappropriate in the winter. So I’ve been experimenting with some (more) braiding techniques.
HOW TO
Part hair on the side.
Starting with a few small pieces in the front, on the side with more hair, french braid your hair to the top of your crown.
From the crown to the end, braid the hair normally.
Secure with pony tail holder.
Divide hair into three sections.
Start the lower braid approximately halfway up your hair.
Start the braid from the side with the tiny braid, making sure you cover the pony tail holder when pulling the first section into the braid.
Complete braid and secure with pony tail holder.
This was great for (1) keeping my hair out of face (2) looking slightly bohemian and (3) practicing braiding my bangs out of my face.

CHRISTMAS GIFT TAGS (Pinspiration)
Tonight was elf-night, where I lock myself in my childhood bedroom and wrap my gifts, plus my dad and brother’s gifts because they’re incapable of doing it themselves. It was all kinds of wonderful. As a side note, I opted out of Christmas music while wrapping so I could listen to the new Childish Gambino album which was absolutely incredible.
I thought these gift tags were cool, so I made a modified version for my own gifts. Mostly because I love bubble lettering.
WHAT I LEARNED
Backwards Lettering. It’s easiest to draw on the back of the wrapping paper so any pen marks don’t show, but you have to be able to draw backwards letters.  The J was throwing me through a loop, but I got it.
Small Letter First.  This is probably obvious to everyone but me, but you should cut the small letter out first, then glue it down to the shadow color and cut around it.
I am probably the worst present wrapper in the history of the world. It’s unclear why anyone let’s me do it, but I do kind of love it. Anyways, these gift tags were a minor foray into cool wrapping. We’ll see what the future holds.

REINDEER CUPCAKES (Pinspiration)
Take two. I’m home for the holidays after a grueling finals period and it is so wonderful. My mom’s work holiday luncheon was today, so after my 6 hour bus ride last night, I got to frost 40 new reindeer cupcakes!
Same basic take as before, except I used large pretzels for the antlers and they look significantly better. Seriously. There’s not bear v. reindeer confusion here, these are certainly reindeer. Anyways, I’m glad I got to spread my Christmas cheer with another batch of cupcakes.
Also, the red M&Ms are perfect for making Rudolphs.  Just saying…

REINDEER CUPCAKES (Pinspiration)
During finals, to get into the Christmas spirit, we had a few friends over for a study break featuring Christmas themed desserts, and featuring a gingerbread making extravaganza. Although I left early to study, I contributed these cupcakes which are super cute and festive and I kind of love them.
WHAT I LEARNED
Ingredients - Chocolate buttercream frosting (it was on sale, but tasty), 1 tube white frosting with a decorating tip, 1 package chocolate chips, 1 box nilla wafers, 1 bag M&Ms, 1 bag mini pretzels.
The Eyes.  Ok, these eyes aren’t perfect. I couldn’t find a little tube of black frosting to dot a white candy (mentos? some kind of mint? scavenge for white m&ms?) for eyes.  So, I made a dot of white frosting and placed a chocolate chip in it. So the pupils are dilated, and the eyes are a little overwhelming.
THE CAVEAT
So, these are supposed to be reindeer. And when you know that, they look like reindeer. But they also look a lot like bears. Unbelievably cute, adorable, cuddly bears, but bears none the less.
So these are getting another go…in the next post!

SANTA CLAUSE MANICURE (Pinspiration)
I love Christmas.  Maybe I just love holidays generally. Anways, after the epic failure of my penguin manicure, I replaced it with these unbelievably easy and adorable Santa nails.
HOW TO
Paint a clear base coat on your nails.
Paint the bottom 1/3 of your nails, near the cuticle, red, using the polish brush.
Paint the top 1/3 of your nails, at the tip, white, using the polish brush.
Use a bobby pin to put white dots across the strip of red, on the side farthest from your cuticle.
Use a bobby pin to put white dots across the strip of white, farthest from the nail tip.
Use the nail brush to pain thin strips of white down the sides of your nails, connecting the bottom red and top white strips.
Let it dry.
Use a tooth pick to place two black eyes in the center of the strip without polish.
Use a bobby pin to create a pink dot, for a nose, at the top of the white strip.
WAVE AT EVERYONE TO SPREAD CHRISTMAS CHEER.

PENGUIN NAILS (Pinspiration)
There’s no cool back story here. I live in the Northeast, where we’re experiencing somewhat of a winterspring.  It’s been 50 - 70 degrees and relatively sunny up here, but it’s DECEMBER.  I want Christmas. Or snow. I live for things that you can only do in the winter - skiing, ice skating, drinking hot chocolate, wearing thick wool sweaters, wearing knee high boots.
So, I tried out these penguin nails.
What I Learned
Nail pens.  I bought two nail pens for half price ($2.99, awesome) at Walgreens.  But the white nail pen sucks.  I tried to dip it in white nail polishs so I could do the detailing with a steadier hand and it wasn’t good.  I think I’d stick to the actual brush, and bobby pins, for the detailing.  Maybe a tooth pick?
Yellow, not orange.  The orange beak and nails look a little Halloween-y.  But I don’t have any yellow nail polish.
Patience. I have zero patience. I didn’t wait for the black base coat to dry enough and the white penguin belly got muddled in with the black for an unpleasant looking grey/white/black speckled mess.  Also, I didn’t wait for the white to dry enough before doing the orange detailing.
So, I’d try these again when I’m not in the middle of cramming for finals so I can take the time to do them properly.

THE LIMOUSINES (Pinspirations)

This is a new element to my “trying things on Pinterest.” If you poke around, you can find a lot of really cool music and book recommendations.

I have the music attention span of a gnat. I listen to one song, on repeat, until I never want to hear it again. I’m that way with a lot of things - I know over indulgence will ruin it for me, but I can’t help myself.

Anyways, I CANNOT work out unless I have music that makes me (A) happy (B) want to dance (c) inspires awesome gym fantasies.

Video Killed the Radio Star by The Limousines is perfect for A, B, and C. If this song ever makes it to karaoke bars, I am going to have one too many beers, head to a karaoke bar at 2AM and live out my rock-star-gym fantasies in real life.

Not really (no one wants to hear that), but a girl can dream.

MACE SPRAY BY THE JEZABELS (Pinspiration)

Sometimes, I wish there was a way I could explain to the world my music choices. Because yes, I’ve listened to Good Feeling by Flo Rida about 200 times already…but that’s cause I work out listening to that song (and only that song….)

But I have other categories of music. This song goes into the category of songs where I felt like the world stopped the first time I heard them. This song makes me want something, even though I don’t know what it is. If I could assign it an emotion, that emotion would be “longing.”

Anyways, I listen to it walking home from school at night and it makes me feel relaxed and a tiny bit sad, but it’s just kind of beautiful.
